Choosing between a group or private sound healing experience in Cape Town isn’t about which one is “better” – it’s about understanding what your body needs in this particular season of life.

While both experiences use the power of sound to support relaxation and nervous system regulation, they each offer something different. Group sound baths create a beautiful shared atmosphere for general wellbeing, whereas private sessions with me provide a therapeutic personalized experience tailored to your physical health, emotional landscape, and current nervous system state.

In my practice, I often describe group sessions as wonderful for ongoing maintenance and restoration, while private sessions offer a deeper level of personalization for those wanting dedicated space to rest, process, and reconnect with themselves. They are also a valuable option for anyone navigating physical limitations, chronic illness, burnout, or significant stress.

Understanding these differences can help you choose the experience that best supports where you are right now.

Before we dive in, I’d also like to share my philosophy as a practitioner. As an experienced practitioner with advanced training in sound healing and sound therapy along with yoga and other somatic practices. I’m always mindful of working within my scope of practice. While sound healing can be a powerful complementary therapy for holistic wellbeing, it is not a substitute for medical care. I don’t diagnose, treat, or prescribe medical conditions. Instead, I create a supportive environment where the body can access its natural capacity to rest, regulate, and restore.

The Science of the Container: Why Your Environment Matters

One of the things I love most about sound healing is that many of the experiences people describe are increasingly being explored through neuroscience and physiology. What can feel deeply intuitive is also supported by a growing body of research into how sound influences the brain and nervous system.

When I play the gong, Tibetan bowls, or crystal singing bowls, their sustained acoustic vibrations encourage a process known as entrainment, where the brain naturally begins to synchronize with the instruments I’m playing. This can help shift us from the fast paced beta brain wave state known as the “always on” mode that many of us spend our days in, towards slower states associated with deep relaxation and meditation.

Theta brain wave states are commonly associated with deep relaxation, meditation, creativity, and memory processing, which is one reason many people describe sound healing as profoundly restorative. At the same time, these slower states may support activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, often referred to as our “rest and digest” response, allowing the body to soften, slow down, and begin restoring balance.

But here’s something I always notice, our ability to settle into these restorative states depends just as much on the environment as it does on the sound itself.

When the body is chronically overworked or navigating a health challenge, the nervous system often becomes hyper-vigilant, constantly scanning the environment for anything that feels unsafe or unpredictable.

If you’re trying to regulate your nervous system while experiencing physical discomfort or feeling socially guarded, your subconscious mind may remain on alert. Your muscles may stay subtly tense, your breathing may remain shallow, and your ability to fully receive the therapeutic benefits of the session can become limited.

The space you choose isn’t simply the backdrop to your experience, it becomes part of the therapeutic process itself.

A Personal Reflection

I know this deeply from personal experience, and I believe it’s important for practitioners to receive this medicine as well.

My journey with sound healing began during the nine years I lived in Thailand, where I was first introduced to the profound power of sound. Over those years, I attended countless sessions and became completely captivated by this healing art.

But it was during a season of intense burnout that I truly understood the difference between a group and private experience.

While I will always love the uplifting resonance and shared energy of a group sound bath, I needed something entirely different. I wasn’t looking for a more luxurious experience, I was looking for a deep personalized healing experience.

More than simply needing a closed-door environment, my body required a very specific sonic landscape. I knew my raw nerves were far too sensitive for brighter, higher frequencies or a session that moves between too many different instruments. What I craved instead was the deep, earthy resonance of a large gong to gently ground me back into my body.

That experience taught me something I still carry into every private session today; true restoration is about the instruments being played but also about creating the right environment and tailoring the sound to the individual receiving it.

It’s the reason I include a consultation before every private session. It isn’t about suggesting that private is somehow “better” than group. It’s about recognizing when your body needs a dedicated, supportive space alongside a session designed entirely around you.

The Group Experience: Shared Resonance and Community

The group sound healing journeys I offer are beautifully accessible, communal experiences. Lying down alongside others creates a unique sense of shared resonance that can feel incredibly supportive and grounding. They are a wonderful practice for general wellbeing and ongoing nervous system maintenance.

The Benefits

1) Collective Amplification

There is a beautiful phenomenon where meditating or resting in a shared space can deepen the overall feeling of calm. The collective intention creates an atmosphere that many people find deeply comforting and restorative.

2) Accessible Lifestyle Maintenance

Group sound baths are a wonderful way to regularly disconnect from the pace of everyday life, clear the mind after a busy week, and give the nervous system an opportunity to reset.

3) Comforting Anonymity

For those new to sound healing, a group setting can feel reassuring. You can simply arrive, lie down, close your eyes, and receive without feeling any pressure or attention focused on you.

The Considerations

1) Environmental Distractions

If your nervous system is already feeling overwhelmed, even small distractions like a cough, someone shifting beside you, or another person’s breathing and even snoring, may keep your system subtly alert and make it harder to completely surrender.

It’s also worth considering practical factors before you arrive. Parking, travel time, room temperature, and comfortable clothing all influence how settled your body feels before the session even begins.

2) Physical Comfort

Group sessions generally follow a standard setup. If you’re managing chronic pain, recovering from an injury, pregnant, or navigating illness, lying on a yoga mat for an extended period may become physically uncomfortable, making deep relaxation more difficult.

3) Generalized Sound Journey

A group session is designed to support the collective experience. The practitioner cannot adjust the choice of instruments, volume, proximity, or pacing around one person’s unique needs, sensitivities, or physical condition.

The Private Container: A Tailored Experience

This is where private sound healing becomes something much more personalized.

Every private session begins with a consultation and intake form. This gives me a deeper understanding of your current physical health, emotional landscape, lifestyle, and nervous system which allows me to thoughtfully design a session around your individual needs.

If you’re navigating burnout, high-functioning anxiety, physical discomfort, or emotional overwhelm, I may choose grounding frequencies from the gong or incorporate a Vibrational Sound Massage using a Tibetan bowl. Someone experiencing brain fog, difficulty concentrating, or feeling creatively depleted may benefit from an entirely different combination of instruments and pacing.

Rather than following one sound journey designed for everyone, every decision is guided by how your body is responding.

Your physical comfort is equally important.

You’ll most likely be lying on a professional massage table with plush blankets, bolsters, pillows, and, during the cooler months, a heated blanket. Every detail is adjusted to help your body feel fully supported, safe, and able to soften.

Unlike a group sound bath, where one experience is created for everyone in the room, a private session allows me to continually adapt the journey in real time. I observe your physical cues throughout the session, adjusting the proximity of instruments, their volume, periods of silence, and the overall flow based on what your nervous system appears to need in that moment.

This level of personalization creates an experience that is both deeply restorative and uniquely your own.

One of the beautiful things about returning for private sessions is the sense of familiarity that naturally develops. As your body becomes more comfortable with the environment, the instruments, and our therapeutic relationship, many people find they can settle more quickly and more deeply with each visit. Like many wellness practices, the benefits often deepen through consistency rather than a single experience.

Which Experience Is Right for You?

Ultimately, there isn’t a right or wrong choice, only the experience that best supports you in the present moment.

Sometimes we benefit from the shared energy and accessibility of a group sound bath. At other times, we need the quiet sanctuary and individualized attention that only a private session can provide.

Learning to recognize what you need is an important part of any healing journey. Whether you choose a group or private experience, the intention remains the same, creating space for your nervous system to soften, your mind to settle, and your body to return to a place of balance.
